hoping that cool new features utilizing these sensors would be developed

Never buy anything for the hopes of what might be added in the future. Buy for the features devices have now.

It applies to general electronic devices as well as cars (Tesla self driving anyone?), preorder games, etc.

I’ve paid premium for titanium 9PP only to find that its vibrations rattle like a toy and to see its price drop by a third in six to nine months post release.

And yet I have the watch on my wrist every day and it’s doing its job for what it was designed for and more (apart from the bugs here and there).

As for why Suunto doesn’t improve older devices? Because why would they when people pay once for the watch and there’s no way to monetise users who bought the watch than making them switch and buy the new watch.

Suunto is known for supporting their devices for a long time. There are people using ancient A3P and Spartan series.

There are things that Suunto could do better, but supporting older devices is fine - considering it’s not open source maintained by hobbyists but business needing constant money flow in order to operate.

@Knigge yeahhh man totally feel with you. There are much Things… Suunto deleted the contour lines in the Maps 1 year before… In the higher zoom Levels… Until today they didnt give new Maps or solution for this… Feels little Bit like you buy a good stuff and then they “downgrade” your product 😢🙄 another example: many users DOWNGRADE the Firmware at the moment cause the OHR measurement and some sleep Things didnt work… The support Here says suunto is working for a fix 😜 with every new Firmware there come more and more things to fear 😅

The “downgrade” you’re mentioning is still an update from when the watch originally shipped LOL

The downvotes you get probably have something to do w caps locks and exclamation points. This forum is generally pretty tolerating of negative view points

Good morning. Since all the complaints about random HR sensor disconnection are being grouped in this thread, I just want to comment that the Suunto Vertical seem to be the least affected, but they also have the problem. In my case it has only stopped once since the update to 2.39.20 and by turning the watch off and on it has started working again (like everyone else). Therefore it is an error that affects everyone and it has already been a month since the update. I think Suunto should have already fixed the error

@Łukasz-Szmigiel “Why should Suunto continue to support older devices?” Well, there’s a simple reason (for me): To retain customers. I will eventually buy a new watch, and my decision in the future will depend on the experiences I’ve had in the past. My experience now is that my S9P is no longer supported. If I buy such a high-quality and expensive watch, I (personally) expect it to be supported for more than 2–3 years. If that’s not the case, I’ll look for another provider that supports its products for a longer time.

With this approach, Suunto has lost a potential future buyer and a (former) advocate of the brand. I used to recommend Suunto to my friends…

@Knigge The problem isn’t that its “different”, the problem is that its a lot less powerfull, thus of course you can’t do the same fancy animations and onboard features as others.
Also, the fact that the ZoneSense is still available on the App for any old Suunto model is already a huge thing, especially when you compare it to Garmin who soft-lock every features to make différenciation in its lineup.
For example my gf has a Venu 3S and can’t select how HR zones are calculated (its based on MHR,but you can’t set it to calculate on MHR-RHR), but her previous Forerunner 35 (yes, 35, not 135) can.

And, as other said, never, ever, buy something on the promise of what it could be

@Elipsus I totally agree with that argument “The hardware can’t handle the calculations.” but “The product is no longer supported, so it’s not available anymore!” — that’s not the case. Thank you (and the others) for the comments!

I think you dont have the contour lines in the bavarian alps Back. Do you have other Maps for this? Then please let us all know! Some people here from Germany in the bavarian alps dont have the contour lines Back since 1 year in the Zoom level above 500m. You KNOW that there are NO NEW Maps for this region! Please use the searching function!

@Knigge your watch is supported and will be for a long time. You’re mistaking support and the development of new features (upgrades). Let me rephrase my question - why should Suunto invest its time and resources to upgrade your watch if it’s no longer sustainable?

You buy the product for what it is now, not for what it might be in the future.

you are supporting all topics, it is not so logic :
Suunto must hurry in fixing some things, BUT also should also “”“”“support”“”“” (= develop) old products with new features which HW may not support (or “potentially” with lots of development/testing efforts).

S9P is still working with its current FW with new functionalities since its release. It is not ‘developped’ as mentionned by others clearly, but it is surely supported (in case a real bug is discovered, or if one particular device has an issue, Suunto will support by any means).

I guess for example when the Spartans got a bug fix six months after what ended up being the last proper FW update in June '19 for the leap year issues in 2020.

@Knigge the 9P is almost four years old. There are no other manufacturers that develop features for products that old.

As pointed out earlier, the Suunto App allows calculations for advanced metrics (like ZoneSense) even on older watches. I just used it with my Ambit 3, last week even.

You continue to incorrectly say that the 9P is no longer supported. You have ZoneSense in the app from the 9P. You have been informed many times in this thread and others that the hardware will not support the calculations for in watch ZoneSense. How do you know this is not true? At any rate Garmin Fenix 7 is not capable of running the current Fenix 8 firmware with all of its new features and is much newer than the 9P. I hope you are happy when you switch brands. Please refrain from beating this topic to death, we have all heard what you have to say in multiple threads and have been more than patient.

Since the last update 2.39.20, my watch sometimes disconnects from SA and won’t reconnect. Restarting the phone doesn’t help. A soft reset of the watch helps. It has happened to me with both Vertical and Ocean. My wife had the same problem with the 9PP. Has anyone experienced this?

I also noticed this weird behaviour. my watch disconnects for no reason few times now. I would say once every two weeks.

@Brad_Olwin As I wrote yesterday at noon: “The argument ‘The old hardware is simply too weak for this calculation’ is one that I can understand and accept.” I’m aware that four years is a very long time in the world of electronics. I also had no intention of disturbing or dragging out this thread in any way. I was/am simply a bit frustrated, that’s all. It’s just my personal feeling. If I used any terms incorrectly, I’d like to apologize for that.

When I said, “The S9P is no longer supported,” I meant that there will be no more updates for this watch. I thought I had specifically referred to the watch and not the app. And I never said that “it’s not true” that the hardware can’t support ZoneSense (or other features). At the beginning, it was always about “the operating system of the watch” and the fact that the old operating system will simply no longer be developed.

In my understanding, there is a difference between a feature not working because it isn’t implemented in the software (the operating system) and a feature not working because the hardware can’t handle it. Saying “The feature doesn’t work because it hasn’t been implemented in the software” also means “We could make the feature usable in the software.” But as I said, if the hardware doesn’t allow it, I fully agree with you that it is what it is.

Actually, I wanted to send you, Brad_Olwin, a personal message with this content to avoid holding up this thread any further, but I couldn’t find that option. And I couldn’t just leave your words as they were. So, please excuse this wall of text, which has no relevance to the current update. I won’t comment any further. I meant no offense to anyone.
