Updates for V1

@martintrail would be great if Suunto could just have a short message on their blog “Sorry guys, for reason xyz we have to delay Q3 and ship it together with Q4.”, wouldn’t it?
I mean customer communications and so. Would help for all the “is it there, yet?”-people.I guess most companies don’t share that kinda of stuff. Also if I recall correctly suunto doesn’t have a public plan aobut releases , like garmin for example.
I’m a new Suunto user, but a long-time user/admin/lover of the Debian Linux distribution. It looks like both share the same principle: a new version is released only when it’s ready (i.e., virtually bug-free), and not according to any predetermined schedule. This is why Debian runs business-critical applications all over the world, and probably why some choose Suunto products over others, despite the wait for new releases. I will not blame Suunto’s developers for dedicating time to thoroughly testing their solution because, imho, robustness matters more than timeline.

… I never liked the fixed long update cycles in any software (and never really stuck with it in my company).
in any case, we do know that V1 is an old device, released some 3 years go etc
we also know that there are issues with the firmware never addressed etc. Probably Suunto is not going to invest a ton on this device, but still any official statement would make sense.Now if Suunto’s policy is : use it if /while it works, don’t question /ask anything, don’t expect any visibility …that’s the way things are, go buy another device etc… it’s another thing. I hope it isn’t though because the usual buyers of a next generation of a watch are happy - loyal- customers of some previous ones. And… It seems that much of Suunto’s loyalty comes from the Ambit 2-3 peak days

the fact that a 600-to-800 euros watch can became obsolete and not supported after just 3 years is a bit frightening … it isn’t?

Obsolete? No, my V1 works just fine, there’s nothing obsolete about it.
Not supported? Being supported does not mean getting all the new bells and whistles with the latest watch models. I still get support if I need and I believe there will be a release addressing the most outstanding issues.

@Stefano-M64 my 22-year-old Yaris is no longer supported as it’s not getting any firmware updates. But hey, it works, is cheap to maintain and gets me from A to B so I guess it’s ok.

@BrunoH Full support of the HRM2 is something I would not call “Bells and Wistles”. My wife (long discontinued) Forerunner 245 support Running dynamics from Garmin HRM. My (still sold by Suunto) V1 doesn’t support running dynamics from Suunto HRM. Thats absolutely not balanced

Obsolete? No, my V1 works just fine,
I didn’t mean obsolete from the functional point of view, but from the Suunto’s one, old hardware cannot receive new features (and that could be ok) while the fix of old bugs seems to be procrastinated to no date
such a flagship devices should worth to be supported for longer period as Samsung does guaranteeing 7 years of updates for the galaxy line top smartphones -

several years ago I bought a Sony Xperia 10 III and, some months later, a Sony Xperia 10 IV for my wife, sadly after about 2 years they stopped receiving OS and security updates … I will never buy a Sony smartphone again for sure.
I just love my Race, but in the next future i really don’t know if I will invest my money in a device that is not guaranteed to have a decent support for the years to come.

Sport watches just do what they do. Like the car mentioned above.
For some time - as long as hardware allows - watches can be improved with new functions. Still they work well without these feature updates.
And since you don’t know what will be improved, and if it is beneficial for your specific use case, it makes no sense to make a buying decision based on features that might possibly come and probably are of no use for you.I understand that it is a good feeling to know that there might be something in it for yourself. still it is just a guess and nothing to build a buying decision on.

Sport watches just do what they do.That is not entirely true. Smartwatches contain privacy data, not the least of which your presumable home address. With some you can pay.
You don’t want anyone hacking into your watch (via bluetooth or wifi) and steal your data.
Smartwatches haven’t been a target. Might be because other systems are easier. Or the data on it is less valuable in money (but maybe more valuable for people with other intentions)

Any news about V1 updates? I saw there is a V2 update with some improvements on D+ calculation (with wind?), which is only “issue” I have with V1 solar. Thanks

@plopes73 Sorry, have not visited this thread in awhile. My solar works well. In full sunlight here in Colorado I have gone on a 1.5 hour run with no loss of battery. So in bright full sun with few obstacles I find the solar is quite good. No other Suunto can match the battery. On long fastback trips I often get the battery estimate of 90h and rarely charge. This is my go to watch for fast packing.

HRM2 has been released months after V1. Nobody at that time in Suunto has ever claimed that the watch will support all new hardware released in the next 5 years. Same for Garmin and any vendor. You can just hope. I do and I am pretty confident that we will get that update (true, no clue).

Sport watches just do what they do. Like the car mentioned above.Same for watches. Any connected device might have security vulnerabilities at some point. All future (connected) watches will fall in the scope of the European Cyber Resilience Act - CRA (in December 2027).

Just a new message to say if you encounter problems with elevation.
Each outing I’ve done shows me an elevation gain that’s far too high.Today, I compared my run and the run of my partner with her race S.

Mine: 209mI post it here because no update are going on from Suunto.
