Hello everyone! First time posting here as I literally just purchased an Ambit3 Run directly from Suunto last week. It is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I spent a few months researching GPS watches and am somewhat bewildered with this news. I really never used with Movescount or the Suunto app but have to say I like having a web browser-based app. I’m currently using Garmin Connect for my Vivoactive 1, and sometimes my trusty 2007 Forerunner 305.

Okay, so I really don’t use as much data as most here, all I want it to see my distance, time and pace/moving pace. I could deal with only have a smartphone app as this is pretty basic data. Will the Suunto app provide this basic information?

I really want to keep the Ambit3 Run, but am a little afraid with reading all of these threads. My second choice was the Polar 430 and am debating just returning the Ambit3 Run when it arrives tomorrow and just getting that. I also toyed with the idea of having a new battery put in my 305, but it’s $99 and the Ambit3 Run was only $149 which is such a bargain for such an amazing watch!

Keep it! The hardware in that watch is second to only maybe the A3 Peak. If accurate tracking and durability is what you’re after, you made the right choice.

Seriously? I don’t know how you can recommend to someone right now that they keep a brand new Ambit3. There’s no such thing as “durability” when the company told everyone they won’t be supporting the product after summer of 2020…

@misterdangerpants , it really pains me to say it but I wouldn’t recommend buying one of the older generation Suuntos right now. If they release something that tells us they will be supporting these watches then it’s a different story.

This is coming from someone with multiple Ambit3 Peaks and I used to recommend them to literally everyone I ran with.

@coldrainsnow I’m so on the fence! ☹ I so want to keep it but not having a web presence (Movescount) really is a negative…

@misterdangerpants There are better web portals than MC although I really liked MC. So you do have that opportunity and don’t have to think that a web portal will not be there.

Did I miss a new communication from Suunto? “Basic Compatibility” is not support for a $300+ watch. Without the ability to change sport modes, change custom routes or way points guaranteed there is no reason to buy this watch.

I know you are just the messenger but this is a very important point that Suunto has missed - if they want to retain customers then they need to issue a statement that they WILL be offering full compatibility and support for the A3 series in the future as they transition to the Suunto app. People will not pay that much money for basic compatibility.

There’s no way they would leave people stuck just like I’m sure they will offer some official work around (or upgrade program) for folks with A2s.

I’ve just initiated the process to return mine to Amazon. I’ll buy a Garmin Fenix 3. Don´t want to wait to know if my watch will be operational after 18 months

@Luis-Andés-Olmedo a very good decision. I’m in a similar situation myself and I do not know what to do. Suunto Ambit 3 Peak is a brilliant watch But the situation is complicated for the future …

Well the only logical decision. Until Suunto cleans this whole mess up, it’s better to stay away from buying older models.

@Emir-Karisik What I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around is that Suunto is still selling the Ambit3 line on its own site for the full price with no indication whatsoever that it’s planning to cripple these watches a year and a half from now.

How is this in any way an acceptable, ethical business practice? Are they unaware or just indifferent that this is a sure-fire way to make your customers migrate to the competition?

They are changing target group and whole strategy, which probably has something to do with the takeover by Anta sport. The problem is the way they chose to do it. Creating this level of uncertainty can’t be part of the plan, it’s more likely just a case of “let’s try this and see what will happen”. They are obviously having some serious management crisis with no clear direction for future yet. I’d really hate seeing them going out of business, but they are surely playing with fire now.

@RiphRaph I wonder how Suunto will solve the situation with the law. Sorry for my English. I come from Poland and the consumer’s right gives me a two-year warranty. What if in 1.5 years I lose support from Suunto and my Ambit 3 will not be fully functional? Will Suunto return my money?

                                    Done.

Ambit 3 peak returned to Amazon.

After Ambit 3 run, ambit 3 run, spartan sport and Ambit 3 peak… bye Suunto.

Forced obsolescence, as Suunto does, is reprehensible by law (French law : L.213-4-1 )
By the way, Apple is paying the price. But if you don’t want everyone move to Garmin … Find a solution quickly.

Suunto is not a French manufacturer, so not so sure that law applies 🙂
