I am having continued issues with the total ascent readings of my Baro 9. It started in early Nov 19 and I was adament that it occured after a software update as the watch was otherwise working flawlessly. I chatted to support for two months to fix the issue and nothing worked. I therefore sent the watch back under warranty. They returned it saying that it needed to be calibrated, however, I had done this in the problem solving.

I returned the watch again and they this time sent me a new one. Now the new watch has exactly the same issues. The issue is very significant, for example, during my last rides the total ascent would be around 500m, however, the watch reporrts 2500m.

The current altitude reading looks corrrect, therefore, i think the baramoter is working properly and I can only assume there is a software bug.

    Has anyone expreineced this?

I’ve had enough with these issues and contemplating throwing it in the bin and buying a Garmin.

@Nick-Vlahandreas hi nick. Please note that aggresive communication eg throwing in the bin and buying a Garmin is not tolerated here. I understand you are frustrated from what I read.

I am here to help you so mutual respect is assumed.

Can I have a link to an activity so I can see how the elevation charts look like?

@Nick-Vlahandreas I do see the issue on your data.

          The general profile looks well.

However zooming you can see some dips and hights that add to your activity ascent and descent.

The reported ascent from the watch is ~1300 wile the true one should be 500-600

          2 Questions:

          • Where do you place the watch?
          • Was it raining?
          • Do you always have this issue or just sometimes (even if sometimes it’s many times)

Ok those where 3 questions 😄

Thanks for looking at it so quickly.

            To answer your questions:

            1. On my left wrist.
            2. Beauttiful sunny stable day.
            3. Always happens. Has been happening since Nov 19, otherwise the watch worked perfectly.

@Nick-Vlahandreas we didn’t push anything that affects the altitude. Typically people here complain for undercounting ascent.

I assume it’s the baro model correct?

                  @Nick-Vlahandreas Roger that.

                  3 solutions.

                  • One is my suspicion : Dirty / blocked sensor
                  • Two is the way you wear the watch, with biking eg when you stand, the sensor holes get blocked and pressure increases , thus those dips happen.
                  • Three ask for a replacement and I ll put a note to replace the unit

                  For 1.

Let the watch soak for 10minutes on lukewarm water. Take it out, and flush under the tap the pressure sensor holes. Make sure you see water coming in and out. Repeat this 3 times. Test afterwards. You can test this via a normal walking activity.

                  For 2

                  On your next bike ride:

                  • USe a buff behind the watch (where the pressure holes are) so skin wont go there in case you push up on the bike. Or change position. You can mount it for example on the bike. A. quick mount can be done via the foam of the box (no need to buy) like the screenshot I ll attach on the end of this comment.

                  For 3

If all the above fail , I can help asking for a replacement for you.

TIPS how to create a 0 cost mount from the Suunto box:

Cut this hole on the foam part of the box

                    Thanks Dimitrios.

I can rule out 1 and 2 as I’ve alwways worn my watch on this hand and had no issues for a year. Secondly, the watch is brand new and the sensors are no dirty.

So, I’d be more than grateful if you can help me out with another new unit.

                    Regards,

@Nick-Vlahandreas I do see those dips there so please first give a chance to rule those out please. Even if the watch is new , this can happen typically when eg shower foam / soap condenses.

That said, if you insist, open a case normally though support (support@suunto.com) and pm me the case number.

This is not normal. And your second watch!!?? It is got to be something with your setting. Do you use altimeter, barometer or automatic mode for altitude?

Watch measure air presure and shows that like altitude. We all know that air preasure changes can came from 2 sides ( altitude, barometric changes). So if you run around stadium, suunto 9 can show you altitude changes, which is ridiculous. On ambit you just set to barometer and all changes are consider as weather changes and that is 100% correct. Am I wrong, Dimitri? 🙂

actually, barometric changes (the sensor is a barometer) will be interpreted as altitude or weather changes.

For Ambit (and in the past for Spartans+S in MC) you can set in which way sensor data must be used.
Readings are 100% correct if you set this option correctly 😁
Now on Spartans+S this option is “always” set to automatic and switches based on the other data

Readings are 100% correct if you set this option correctly 😁

Only on stadium with barometer mode. If you set watch to altitude or automatic mode and run trail running, there is no guarantee, that all ascent difference is from altitude (some percentage is definitelly from weather changes). Only for old suunto watches of course
