      Hi all,
I noticed my watch switches to wifi very often, even though I have my phone close. It drains battery and doesn’t notify me about calls, so it’s not great. Anyone had similar issues? I keep doing soft resets, usually helps for a little while. Don’t want to do hard reset again, as I already had to “fix” issues this way and it’s been really annoying… And in hasn’t helped before either.

Miui is known to be very aggressive in killing background app. You need to whitelist the suunto app itself

Android OS manages what apps run in the background and how long for. Depending on the phone it can be more or less agressive. Due to this most manufacturers include a memory management optimization. Not sure where it is in a Redmi, but can advise how I do it on a OnePlus - basically you want to lock the wear os app & possibly the suunto app into the phones memory & battery usage so that the OS doesn’t kill them.

I tend to go into the app, and do it via the app’s options:
Settings - Apps & Notifications - See all apps. Find the Wear OS app and go into it. Under Optimization settings - change it so that the app is unrestricted. OnePlus calles this section battery optimization - and gives 3 options - intelligent control (os automatically decides what to kill that is in background); Optimize (doesn’t allow an app to run in the background - useful for those apps that are power hungry and you dont need to run in background like some games etc); Don’t Optimize - will not kill when in background.

There are other options, like locking an app in the active app screen (ie. shows which apps are active). in Oneplus I drag up from bottom of screen to launch current apps screen - which shows tiles of all current running apps - long pressing on tile offers lock, app info and split screen. Press Lock. I prefer not to use this method, as if closed from this screen or another, it takes it out of memory. Setting the do not restrict option ensures it always remains in background memory, even if app is closed, ensuring your bluetooth connection always remains active.

I have never noticed any signficant battery drain or performance issues due to keeping the wear os app always in the background

                Thanks guys
So far I’ve only modified (turned off) battery optimization for wear os app, thought it’s the one that is responsible for the connection. Did the same for the suunto app now, fingers crossed it’ll work!

@Piotrd suunto app shouldn’t need it, as should be fine when have it open and actively using it. I have it on as intelligent control.

@Jamie-BG so after I both locked these apps and turned off battery optimization, it’s not disconnecting bt. And the battery life is now around 2 days with AOD, so pretty neat. Thanks for help!

@Piotrd NP - keep saying manufacturers need to include this trick in there setup instructions.
One of the major issues people tend to have is disconnection, and it is seldom if ever due to watch - pretty much always due to android being over aggressive in terms of battery/ram management.

@Jamie-BG exactly! I may be angry at some bugs, but this clearly isn’t the watch’s fault. And the disconnection issue drastically affects the battery life which so many people complain about.

@Piotrd - tends to reduce battery life, as when no bluetooth connection it automatically turns on wifi (you can switch this off); however now that your connection issue is resolved it shouldn’t be a major issue going forward.

PS - would recommend switching play store on watch to manual update - you will get a notification when their is an app to update, and this way it stops the watch choosing an inoportune mate to update (when it might try and use wifi when there isn’t and or end up using bluetooth for download - which can take up quite a bit of juice).
