I’m discussing Suunto vs Garmin in triathlon with the 5k runner.
What’s your experience with Suunto in tri and multisport? I think the S9P would be great for that, especially due to the reduced size. Though Suunto still needs to fix the (multiple) power meter and missing swim drills functionality. The S9P makes me considering replacing my 2016 SSU. Though, being a SSU early adopter, makes me wait for reading some real life experience with the units from people before I buy. https://the5krunner.com/2021/05/25/suunto-9-peak-review-comparison/?noamp=mobile#comments

Previously used: Cyclosport HAC4, Polar S710, Ambit 2S, Ambit 3S, SSU, S5P, S9P Ti. Currently using: Race Ti.

        Pre-ordered the all black version.
Main reasons why I did consider the purchase to replace my S9 Baro:

        • smaller and lighter for the same autonomy
        • new OHR (finger cross it will work better than previous one !)
        • release in line with my birthday month 🙂

          @theo-lakerveld it depends.

Suunto has two things in triathlon: the mode to change sport is not susceptible to wrong press like others watches and, the second thing, you can have autolap and manual laps.

In the other hand, In Suunto is not possible to customise the screens in triathlon and the support of power meter- speed-cadence is not ideal.

The s9P is the perfect size for triathlon like the Garmin 945. In that segment Garmin is more customisable and let you tweak almost everything.

I have a friend he uses the Garmin for training, the sync with TrainingPeaks is a big deal for him, but when he races he prefers to use the Suunto and in the bike he uses a Garmin 1030.

Am I the only one who likes big watches 🙂 50 or 51 mm diameter .Looks like only one ‘player’ stays with this dimensions 😞

I’m with you on this. I prefer the ‘chunkier’ look and feel of my old S9B and 50mm is great from a runners perspective. My main daily wearer is a Rolex which is 40mm - if that’s all I’d ever wear it’s fine as you get used to it. But putting that watch on after wearing the S9B for a while makes it look tiny

43mm isn’t tiny by any stretch, but I would personally prefer it to be a bit larger

@wakarimasen absolutely agree. Having a Fenix 6 Pro, I really don’t like the whole System in the Watch and in the App - as you say: it wants to do everything and I get completely lost in it😅. The S9 Peak seems great but I am not sure how good the small screen is for my 50+ aging eyes. I have a S5 which I only use for longer hikes and running where I want pace or HR alarms but not as a main watch because the display is too dark and too low contrast for me. So I also bought a S7 for „everyday“ use with its gorgeous display that I can easily read without glasses 🤓.

@chrisa I also have vision problems due to age (strong presbyopia and glasses but not always for running), hence my doubt about this Peak model and my preference for the S9B.
It would be necessary to test in real conditions …
I specify that I only use the watch for sport and therefore not really interested in a small “all-purpose” model.

@rob33 Yes you’re right! One must really „see“ it by oneself! @Brad_Olwin wrote, that the display is better, sharper and with the ambiance light sensor it might be a really good choice for people whose eyes are getting older or are weaker due to eye problems. Mine are „just“ the normal deterioration after you reached the 40s, seeing small and low contrast not sharp anymore.

                      I have 53 years 😕
without glasses I need big numbers, I use 3 fields max 4.
I also have sunglasses in my sight and there no more worries! But I also like to run without (bad weather, night etc …)

@chrisa I am 45 now and my eyes are not longer the same… Have already som problems with the S9B when moving fast. Thinking of the further evolution of watches Suunto should have the following in mind. The users of this premium segment are getting older and older 😉 it is important to remember that. And it is often these group that has ressources to buy watches in this premium segment 😉

@stefan-kersting Yes, completely agree. When you’re in your 20s and 30s you might not have the money or you need it for other things like building a house and the children. A friend of mine sells cars and he sells a lot of new VW Golf GTIs to people 40+ whose dream car that was when they were 20, but they could not afford it back then…😃
