I have never had a crash with Vertical. 2 years. I had a couple of crashes with the 9baro.

Before that I used Garmin devices, too many different versions to list, including Fenix 3, 3hr and 5. Bike computers and handheld GPS devices. All crashed at some point but never constantly. Forerunner over 25 years ago was my first wrist based GPS. You couldn’t call it a watch it was massive 🤣

I also have had 2x Wahoo bike computer that has never crashed.

To think these tiny devices will not crash at some point is very optimistic.

      Garmin Fenix 3, 5

But to say the ones who do not post don’t have any problem is a bit too simple. There are people who have problems but aren’t bothered by them. Or they simple don’t know there is a forum. They might complain on strava that their watch crashed.

Just under a 1000 forum members (according the to numbers in the various groups) 😉

There are people who complain on Reddit who don’t know that this forum exists. Or they simply don’t consider any channels outside of Reddit, Instagram, or Twitter.

@wakarimasen I’ve only ever owned Suunto watches for training & as you can see from my signature that’s been a fair while now.

The Race is the first of them that I’ve worn 24/7 (20 months now) but I’ve never experienced a single crash on any of them👍

Are you using a custom sport activity or a default one ?

Just the defaults. I do not dare to do anything else.

This is totally useful. Great addition to this discussion.
Do you want to exchange your Race with mine? Is that what you’re trying to tell me?

By the way - I have no agenda here… I just thought that it’s easy for a new user to see such a topic and think that there’s an endemic problem. It’s an old cliche that most people comment to complain and few do so to celebrate, and I just wondered 😉

I post my crashes here to inform Suunto and make them improve their product. Believe me, I would love nothing more than a device that does not crash.

I got my Race for almost 2 years now and experienced around 10 crashes with different firmware versions in total.

Whenever I sent my logs and inform about the crash I genuinely hope that some developers at Suunto get active and become better, more professional programmers. Because that’s their job. A crash always has a reason.

If there’s one thing I hate, it’s answers like “mine never crashed” or “it’s your fault”.

In all these watches there isn’t really an operating system in a common sense. There are no multiple processes. All of them run a single process. So if something happens, for example, in an S+ app, like division by zero, the whole thing goes down.

that’s fine, but it shouldn’t make OPs issue inevitable. one of the basic parts of embedded system design is to recover after a failure. eg, it can write activity data to a temporary file which it then deletes on activity completion. if it crashes beforehand, it checks for activity data on reboot and asks if you want to resume it.

in fact, AFAIK this is exactly how garmin works (someone in this thread confirms it), though I wouldn’t know as I’ve never had my garmins crash in 6 years… my suunto race S crashed twice in 30 days, once during an activity.

Not really saying the first (although it’s true) and definitely not saying the second - even though it appears you would like that to be the case.

In fact, I’m more interested in understanding if your situation is an isolated instance against a backdrop of few similar failures. That would be interesting to other (and especially potential) users. In a way it might even help you too…or not, that’s fine as well.

I have had several Suuntos and a Garmin bike computer. I only have had one crash mid activity with the S9B and two saving the activity in the S9B too in the five years that I’ve been using the watch. Now, in 1.5 years with the SV, zero crashes. With the Garmin 530, I had a crash every 10 rides aprox. now I own a Coros Dura and zero crashes so far.

@Olaf-Gottschalk If you have had so many crashes, 10 in two years are too much, in my opinion, and taking into account that seems that people do no have as many issues as you have I would tend to believe that or your hardware is not right and makes your watch crash or you use something around the watch that make it crash (magnets, etc…) or your case of use is what makes the watch crash and hasn’t been considered during the watch tests. In any case I think that Suunto should contact you to find the issue.

@Olaf-Gottschalk 10 crashes in 2 years, that sounds horrible. Sounds like something is faulty and since uou mentioned different fw, most likely it is something with hardware. Or are you recording activity like 2-3 times a day everyday?

@Olaf-Gottschalk I do not know if this is at all helpful but my experience with the Vertical was same as yours crash after crash. Even the replacement had the same. Got the Race (after no crash experience for a year with the FR965) and it was perfect - except on this one long run that I had snap to route but the GPS drift was so bad that the track at the end and all the notifications off track on track were pretty bad - resolved it with Hard reset.
And I also have the Ocean…. Not a single issue since day one: not a single crash, not a single GPS drift… stable like tank!

Just checked SA, I have 422 activity record this year, walking, cycling and yoga mainly. No crashing.

I’d think 10 could possibly be something wrong with that particular watch.
