@VoiGAS The watch just can’t read the data from the belt. It’s a shame, so we’ll see if an update comes out.

The fact is known. But obviously not easy to solve.
At the bottom of the SHRM2 website the compatibility is listed as follows:

Plus from internal tests SHRM2 is also compatible with:

Suunto 9 Peak
Suunto 5
Spartan Trainer WHR
Spartan Sport WHRB
Karoo2
and other devices I won’t list here.

@martintrail This is in the app description: it uses metrics sent by the watch and does not connect to the belt. So same limitations than the watch.

@bubuche Ok, that makes sense. Hopefully a “real” S+ app for the HRB2 will be released then - or an update for V1

@VoiGAS From what I have understand in the Telegram Channel (info from Suunto’s people there is a bit boogy, so you can only guess) is that the compatibility for this metrics in Race and Race S was introduced in their last firmware update. This makes me believe that some code in the bluetooth needs to be updated in the SV1 to read these values because, if I’m not mistaken Race do not have running metrics embedded in the watch.
I hope that eventually something will come to teh SV1 and the Suunto App (which right now is not able to read the metrics) because if not I think the new belt is only intended to improve what the watches already have…I would buy it if I can get these metrics, if not I will continue using the Heart Rate Belt 1.

Anyone compared GCT from belt with GCT from watch?

My first run with the belt gave a 45% higher GCT from the belt.

Correct. A cracked rib and sprained ankle prevents me from trying it on my Race S, but here’s a picture guide of the whole chain necessary to see Live data in Running sessions. After pairing the SHRM2 to both the watch and the Suunto App, the main switch at App [upper left hand corner HR icon] -> “Running form monitoring” must be turned “On”. It is “Off” by default, to save battery:

Finally making sure the “Running form” data is received by the watch. On the Race S this switch was ‘On’ by default, even when the main switch in the App was “Off”:

The firmware update you understood having introduced this compatibility is smart enough to not show the “Running form” switch in any Walking session - to me that is a good sign.

The information from the Suunto SHRM2 website states that running form IS available in Suunto race.

My only experiences with ‘running dynamics’ are from Garmin watches and peripherals, where the data differs significantly when it came from a pod placed at the back of running shorts/pants, a HR breast belt pod or directly from a watch. Ray Maker (dcrainmaker) wrote a whole essay about this fact several years ago.

Edit: Also have experience with two generations of Stryd foot pods (though not the latest which can be used on both feet to show ‘Balance’).

I currently don’t have a Race here, but you are saying, that the running form metrics are not recorded by Race and Race S?
Not sure what you mean by “native”. If the watch is receiving the extra data, then it is native. If the watch is not receiving the extra data, then it is not available (like in Vertical).
In between these two could possibly be an S+ app, that connects to the belt on a separate BT channel and reveives those data. That is, what I would call “not native”. Currently an app like this does not exist, afaik.

No, what I am saying (and how I interpreted the question), is that Suunto Run, Run2, Race2 and Vertical2 all have native running dynamics coming from sensors in the watch itself. They do not need the SHRM2 to show this data.

Race, and Race S both need the external hardware of an SHRM2.

There are for sure differences but not as large as what I was seeing. Mybe time to dig out my Stryd pods for a comparison.

@Inge-Nallsson Unfortunately, I haven’t tried using Dynamics yet, but I also understand that you need the S+ app to view real-time data on the watch. If you don’t use the S+ app, you can still view the data later in the SA.

@Egika This I know.
What I was trying to say is that the ability in the Race and Race S to read these metrics from the new HR belt was enabled in their last firmware update, the one that the SV1 didn’t receive. This makes me believe that can be enabled in the SV1 too.

UPS dropped off my new Suunto Smart Heart Rate Belt 2 today

First proper test this evening. Really curious to see what Suunto got right this time — and what they didn’t
